Ballistic Shrapnel

The critical table for everything that arrives in more than one piece — grenades and explosives, shotguns at spread range, and automatic fire. One bullet makes one hole and this table does not describe it: here the target is found by several things at once. Sized against the RMU core Puncture table (Core Law p. 233), in that table's own location-band layout, with Weapon Law: Firearms 6.5 (book p. 123) as the historical starting point. Roll d100 (not open-ended) and cross-index with the critical's severity.

Reading a result: areas and coverage

The mechanic that makes this table different. The location column names one to three areas — Head, Chest, Abdomen, Legs, Arms — and the breadth grows with the roll: one area up to roll 25, two to 85, three from 86 up. The pattern strikes every named area. A result then reads in three parts, and nothing is ever looked up on another table:

The tokens before the first clause are the base — hits and stun that apply always, armour or no armour; the blast reaches the target either way. On a single-area row the covered: clause applies where the target's armour covers the area and the bare: clause where it does not. On a multi-area row each named area carries its own pair — covered effects, a slash, bare effects. Read the side the armour dictates, area by area, and add everything you read. Covered sides are the energy dumped through the plate — extra hits, and each armour piece struck makes one breakage check even when it covers two named areas. Bare sides are fragments in flesh — the bleeding and the lasting injury land there.

Armour also decides survival. Where a bare side carries ☠ dying, the wound in that area is the one that kills — the foe is dying unless armour covers that area, and where two areas carry it, every one must be covered. A Foe is dying/dead stated at the head of the cell applies regardless: at that severity the pattern itself is unsurvivable, and no vest changes it.

A Chest + Arms pattern against a torso vest is base, plus the chest's covered side, plus the arms' bare side — one pass. This is where a torso-only vest earns its reputation: against a single bullet it either catches it or it does not, but most of a body is not torso, and the wide rolls of this table go looking for the rest of it. Coverage matters far more here than protection value does.

Head1AOne of them clips the top of foe’s ear on its way past. He will find the notch tomorrow.+1Hcovered: ⚒︎BThe pattern goes wide and something small skips off his scalp. A line of heat and nothing else.+1Hcovered: ⚒︎bare: +3HCGrit and one hard piece rake across the brow. Foe blinks it out and keeps going.+2Hcovered: ⚒︎bare: +4HDSomething strikes the skull flat and hard. Foe’s head rings like a struck pot and the world tilts.+1H1✹[-50]covered: ⚒︎bare: +4HESeveral find the side of his face at once. Chest2 - 3AThe pattern arrives a foot wide of him and peppers the wall instead.+1Hcovered: ⚒︎bare: +2HBTwo or three strike his coat and stop in the layers. Bruises the shape of coins.+2Hcovered: ⚒︎bare: +4HCOne catches him over the sternum and knocks the wind clean out. He is a moment finding his next breath.+1H1✹[-50]covered: ⚒︎bare: +4HDA tight group across the chest. Nothing gets through, and the whole front of him is one flat ache.+1H1✹[-50]✳︎covered: ⚒︎bare: +3HEA shallow furrow across the ribs where the burst grazed him. On cloth and skin it weeps and keeps weeping; on armour it is one more dent.+2Hcovered: +5H, ⚒︎bare: +4H, ♦︎1
Abdomen4 - 5AThe spread of them tears his coat open across the belly and takes nothing with it.+1Hcovered: ⚒︎bare: +3HBOne strikes the belt buckle square. Foe folds around the blow more from surprise than harm.+2H1✹[-50]covered: ⚒︎bare: +4HCTwo land in the soft part above the hip. The bone holds and everything around it protests.+4Hcovered: +4H, ⚒︎bare: +10HEThe pattern rakes the flank from hip to navel. Bare, it is a row of small leaking holes; caught, it is a stripe of bruise deep enough to keep.+2Hcovered: +10H, ⚒︎bare: +4H, ♦︎1
Leg6 - 10ASomething heavy strikes the thigh flat. The leg goes briefly numb from hip to knee.+2H1✹[-50]covered: ⚒︎bare: +4HBTwo catch him low on the calf. If nothing covers it, the boot is going to need emptying.+1H✳︎covered: ⚒︎bare: +3H, ♦︎1CA close group across the thigh. Whatever it finds uncovered, some of them stay in.+2H1✹[-50]✳︎covered: ⚒︎bare: +6H, ♦︎2ESeveral strike the back of the thigh together, and bare muscle there ends up more hole than muscle.+2H1✹[-75]✳︎covered: ⚒︎bare: +8H, ♦︎2
Arm11 - 15AA handful rattle off the outside of his arm. Bruises in a neat line and nothing broken.+2Hcovered: ⚒︎bare: +6HBOne strikes the point of the elbow hard enough to numb the arm to the fingertips; the skin over it splits where it shows.+2H1✹[-50]✳︎covered: ⚒︎bare: +8H, ♦︎1CTwo arrive in the bicep. In flesh they lodge and stay; on armour they hammer the arm half-dead.+2Hcovered: +7H, ⚒︎bare: +6H, ♦︎2DThe group crosses the forearm at an angle. Unarmoured, it goes in one side and part-way out the other.+4H1✹[-50]covered: +7H, ⚒︎bare: +11H, ♦︎2ESeveral find the inside of the upper arm, where everything important runs close to the surface.+2H1✹[-75]covered: ⚒︎bare: +8H, ♦︎2, -5
Head16 - 20AOne clips the jaw and the rest go past his ear close enough to feel. Foe loses a second to the noise alone.+2H1✹[-50]covered: ⚒︎(-25)bare: +6HBGrit and metal across the forehead. A bare scalp being what it is, he is instantly wearing most of what it sheds.+2H1✹[-50]covered: ⚒︎(-25)bare: +4H, ♦︎1CSeveral take him across the cheek and jaw. Whatever they catch uncovered, he will be picking pieces out of for a week.+2H1✹[-50]covered: ⚒︎(-25)bare: +8H, ♦︎1DA hard piece skips off the skull above the ear. The bone holds; the inside of it sloshes.+3H1✹[-50]✳︎covered: ⚒︎(-25)bare: +9HEThe pattern crosses his face. With nothing in the way, one takes an eyebrow, and the eye beneath it fills before he can blink.+2H1✹[-75]✳︎covered: ⚒︎(-25)bare: +8H, ♦︎2
Chest21 - 25AA solid strike over the ribs stops everything for a moment — his breath, his aim, and whatever he was about to say.+3H1✹[-50]covered: ⚒︎(-25)bare: +9HBTwo arrive over the ribs. Bare, they go into the chest wall and stay; caught, they leave coin bruises and a creak.+2Hcovered: +2H, ◷10, ⚒︎(-25)bare: +6H, ♦︎2CThe group takes him across the front from collarbone to short ribs — a line of strikes, and holes wherever it found only shirt.+4H1✹[-50]covered: ◷10, ⚒︎(-25)bare: +11H, ♦︎2DSeveral land together over the lung. Through cloth they break into the chest wall, and every breath starts sounding like it is taken through a rag.+4H1✹[-75]covered: +3H, ◷10, ⚒︎(-25)bare: +11H, ♦︎3, -5EThe whole burst arrives on the chest at once. Skin takes it as a field of small wounds that all bleed at their own pace; a vest takes it as one long hammering.+7H1✹[-50]covered: ◷20, ⚒︎(-25)bare: +20H, ♦︎4, -5
Abdomen + Legs26 - 35AThe pattern lands low, belt to thigh in one rattle. Armour drums it off; bare skin takes a nick at every second step of it.+15HAbdomen: +4H, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎1Legs: +2H, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎1BOne hard strike in the gut folds him for a breath while the rest patter down his thigh. Small trouble everywhere it finds skin.+15H1✹[-50]Abdomen: ◷10, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎1Legs: ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎1CThe middle of the burst takes the belly and the tail of it the leg. Where he is open, the gut starts leaking in earnest.+10H1✹[-50]Abdomen: +4H, ◷10, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎3Legs: +2H, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎1DSeveral land around the navel and down the near leg. Whatever is uncovered keeps a piece of it, none of them anywhere good.+15H1✹[-75]Abdomen: ◷10, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎1, -5Legs: ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎1, -5EThe group crosses his middle and thigh in one sweep. Armour turns it into a beating; bare, it opens a row of small ragged holes with the pieces still sitting in them.+32H1✹[-75]Abdomen: ◷20, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎3, -5Legs: ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎1, -5
Legs + Abdomen36 - 45ATwo in the thigh and one against the hip. Where they find skin they stay in it, small and deep and slow to close; foe walks on that leg, but running is a different question.+12HLegs: +5H, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎1Abdomen: +3H, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎1BA wide spread across the front of the leg and up over the hip. Caught, it hammers muscle flat; bare, it is ragged little wounds that will not close on their own.+15HLegs: +13H, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎1Abdomen: +9H, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎1CSeveral go in along the thigh and low in the gut where nothing stops them. One of them lies alongside the vein and makes itself known.+15H1✹[-75]Legs: ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎2, -5Abdomen: ◷10, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎2, -5DThe pattern takes the shin and climbs to the hip. Unarmoured, bone chips travel with the metal; armoured, the leg is one long bruise with a limp in it.+20H1✹[-75]Legs: +6H, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎4, -5Abdomen: +4H, ◷20, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎2, -5EThe group takes the leg from ankle to hip and finishes in the gut. However much of it is covered the weight still arrives — and everything left bare keeps a fragment and leaks around it.+32H2✹[-50]Legs: ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎4, -5Abdomen: ◷20, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎2, -5
Arms + Chest46 - 55AThree along the forearm and one against the ribs. Bare, they lodge where they land and weep steadily; the hand still works, and reports everything twice.+12H1✹[-50]Arms: ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎2Chest: ◷10, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎2BThe pattern rakes the inside of the arm from elbow to wrist and spends its last against the chest. Bare, most of what runs there opens.+15H1✹[-75]Arms: +2H, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎4Chest: +2H, ◷10, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎2CSeveral strike the upper arm and carry on to the shoulder. In armour the limb is beaten numb; out of it, the wounds are the kind that drip a trail.+15H1✹[-50]Arms: +15H, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎2Chest: +9H, ◷10, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎2DA tight group into the elbow and onward to the chest. What armour catches, it catches as one enormous blow; what it does not fills joint and rib with things that were never meant to be inside them.+15H1✹[-75]Arms: +21H, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎2, -5Chest: +13H, ◷20, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎2, -5EThe spread crosses the arm and carries on into his side. The weight of it alone rearranges his stance; open skin makes it worse.+29H1✹[-75]Arms: ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎2, -5Chest: ◷20, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎2, -5
Arms + Head56 - 65ATwo into the shoulder meat and one past the ear close enough to touch. The arm lifts, slowly, and complains the whole way up.+10H1✹[-50]Arms: +11H, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎1Head: +7H, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎1BA close group across the shoulder, the last of it clipping the jaw. None of them alone would matter; together they end his reach on that side.+20H1✹[-50]Arms: +2H, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎3Head: +2H, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎1CSeveral cross the shoulder and one skips up along the scalp. Whatever found skin is bleeding, and the arm has opinions about being raised.+20H2✹[-75]Arms: +1H, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎3, -5Head: +1H, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎1, -5DThe pattern takes the shoulder from three directions and rings the side of his head on the way. Uncovered, the shoulder keeps two of them and opens further every time he moves it.+23H2✹[-75]✳︎Arms: +7H, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎3, -5Head: +5H, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎1, -5EThe group takes him at the armpit and jaw together — everything crowded, none of it padded by more than what he wore. Where nothing stopped them they are in him to stay, and the bleeding starts before he has finished turning.+44H2✹[-75]Arms: +10H, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎5, -5Head: +6H, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎3, -5
Abdomen + Chest + Legs66AA hard group low across hip, ribs and belly. On plate it is a flat, enormous slap; on skin it grinds small pieces into the joint.+20H1✹[-75]Abdomen: +17H, ◷30, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎2, -10Chest: +10H, ◷10, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎1, -5Legs: +6H, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎1BThe pattern arrives squarely in the groin and spreads up his front and down both thighs. There is nothing to add and no one at the table will want it added.+37H2✹[-75]Abdomen: +6H, ◷30, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎5, -10Chest: +4H, ◷20, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎2, -5Legs: +2H, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎2CSeveral shatter the pelvis, the rest climb his front and rake both thighs. Foe stops being a standing creature in the space of one breath.+42H2✹[-75]Abdomen: +9H, ◷50, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎5, -15Chest: +6H, ◷30, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎2, -10Legs: +3H, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎2, -5DThe whole group finds his middle and legs at once, and nothing in there is where it should be. He has minutes, and he will spend them on the ground.☠︎ Foe is dying. +48H4✹[-75]Abdomen: +6H, ◷50, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎8, -45Chest: +4H, ◷50, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎4, -35Legs: +2H, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎3, -10EIt takes him low and travels upward through everything that keeps him working. He is still upright, and that is the last thing about him that is.☠︎ Foe is dying. +35H5✹[-75]Abdomen: +12H, ◷30, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎8, -35Chest: +8H, ◷30, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎4, -30Legs: +4H, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎3, -10
Legs + Abdomen67 - 75AA group into the calf and a stray above the belt. Deep enough to matter wherever it is not caught: the pieces stay in, the wounds stay open, and foe’s push-off on that side is gone.+15H1✹[-50]Legs: +9H, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎4Abdomen: +5H, ◷10, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎2BSeveral strike the lower leg and one rides up over the hip. Bare, the shin bleeds around a deep bone bruise that will outlast the month.+23H1✹[-75]Legs: +1H, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎2Abdomen: +1H, ◷10, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎2CThe pattern crosses the knee and finishes against the hip. The joint keeps several of them if nothing is in the way, none where they can be reached.+20H2✹[-50]Legs: +6H, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎2, -5Abdomen: +4H, ◷20, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎2, -5DA tight group into the thigh and gut. What armour does not take, flesh keeps — and complains about at every step.+20H2✹[-75]Legs: ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎2, -5Abdomen: ◷20, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎2, -5ESeveral go deep into the thigh and low into the belly, and one finds the artery if skin is all there is. Either way the leg folds and foe goes down.+42H2✹[-75]⇘Legs: +5H, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎5, -10Abdomen: +3H, ◷30, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎3, -10
Chest + Arms76 - 80AA close group over the ribs, the edge of it catching the forearm. Bare, two break through, and breathing becomes a thing he has to decide to do.+23H1✹[-75]Chest: ◷20, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎3Arms: ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎1BThe pattern crosses the chest below the collarbone and down the near arm. Caught, it is a hammering that leaves him ringing; open, several stop against the shoulder blade from the inside.+20H2✹[-75]Chest: +15H, ◷30, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎3, -5Arms: +9H, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎1, -5CSeveral arrive over the lung and along the forearm together. If the vest takes them, the vest takes them hard; if not, the sound of him changes.+20H2✹[-75]Chest: +12H, ◷20, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎4, -5Arms: +8H, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎2, -5DThe group crosses both lungs and the arm raised in front of them. Where he is open, foe is drowning standing up, in open air.+25H3✹[-75]Chest: +1H, ◷20, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎6, -20Arms: +1H, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎4, -10ESeveral find the great vessels above the heart, the rest the arm in front of them. Unstopped, the chest fills from the inside and there is no wound anyone could press.+33H2✹[-75]Chest: +17H, ◷50, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎6, -20Arms: +11H, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎4, -10
Head + Chest81 - 85AA group across the jaw and collar. Where it lands on skin he is cut both places; either way he is a moment making himself understood.+15H1✹[-75]Head: ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎2Chest: ◷10, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎2BSeveral take the throat beside the windpipe and the top of the chest below it. Every uncovered breath whistles through the new openings.+20H2✹[-75]Head: +7H, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎3, -5Chest: +5H, ◷20, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎3, -5CThe pattern crosses skull and breastbone in one line. A helmet turns it into bells; a bare scalp lifts off over a hand’s width, and the bone beneath holds.+27H2✹[-75]Head: +17H, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎3, -5Chest: +11H, ◷30, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎3, -5DSeveral strike the face and the chest beneath it together. Whatever is not covered — he keeps the skull, and loses most of what was arranged on the front of it.+20H2✹[-75]Head: +1H, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎3, -20Chest: +1H, ◷20, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎3, -10EThe group opens the side of the neck and the chest below it where they show. What comes out comes out in time with his heart.+42H3✹[-75]Head: +4H, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎4, -20Chest: +2H, ◷30, ⚒︎(-25) / ♦︎4, -10
Arms + Chest + Head86 - 90AA dense group up the forearm, across the chest and past the ear. He drops what he held — with luck because of the bruise, without it because of the fingers that are gone and the wet that follows them.+25H2✹[-75]Arms: +7H, ⚒︎(-50) / ♦︎4, -5Chest: +5H, ◷20, ⚒︎(-50) / ♦︎3, -5Head: +3H, ⚒︎(-50) / ♦︎2, -5CSeveral cross him wrist to jaw in one line.
